Is your site infectious?

Viral marketing is defined a little differently by everyone - so now its Looker's turn! At the end of the day - is your site worth talking about?
Definition
In general a website planning on being "viral" needs something of the following:
- Content that is compelling - relevant & informative, interesting, fun, and fresh to make it worth coming back to - and worth forwarding to friends;
- Make it simple for visitors to forward the information around;
- Give away something for free - never mind what it is;
- An attractive site confirming to the rules of good web design - the four "l"s are a good basic guide;
- DO NOT take any actions with email which can be considered Spam.
Such a web-based marketing strategy backed up by enthusiastic promotion on a "have you seen my new site" basis has real hopes of finding itself in the public eye. After all - it worked for hotmail.
The Problem with Viral Marketing
Anything seemingly simple gives the impression that anyone can do it.
The world is full of template driven fifteen to twenty year-olds who know how to build web sites ...and yet lack the faintest idea of how to design them.
I call this Kentucky Fried Syndrome. Anyone who can half-burn a dead chicken and drop it in a cardboard box thinks they are Colonel Saunders. If the box looks nice enough you may even sucker a few customers.
But God help you the day they discover the real thing!
For these reasons I will never recommend DIY websites as they look like what they are - on the cheap and amateur.
Remember - your viral message could wind up being "Hey - Look at my site and check this example of what NOT to do!! Man it sux!!"
Thus the rules are:
Build a good quality site - load it with appropriate content - give something for free - make 'em laugh here and there.
Then - TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW THAT ITS THERE
Then - Sit back and check your Webstats!
